Starting a freelance career with no experience can seem daunting, but it is possible with the right approach.
Here are some steps to help you get started ⤵️
⚡️ Identify Your Skills
Think about your current skills, experience, and passions. Identify the areas where you have knowledge or expertise, and think about how you can offer value to potential clients.
Try a good old mood board!
⚡️ Build a Portfolio
Even if you have no formal experience, you can still create a portfolio of your work. You can create sample projects that showcase your skills like a website or a blog.
Starting up a social media page showcasing your work is also a great idea. That’s how I got most of my clients when I started out. Check out my LinkedIn page or my Instagram page for examples!
⚡️ Leverage Your Network
Let people know that you’re looking for freelance work! Reach out to family and friends and ask if they know anyone who needs your services. Furthermore, you can also use social media platforms like LinkedIn to connect with potential clients.
⚡️ Use Freelance Platforms
There are many freelance platforms like Upwork, Freelancer, and Fiverr that can help you find clients. Sign up for these platforms and then create a profile that highlights your skills and experience.
⚡️ Offer Lower-Cost Services
When starting out, consider offering your services at a lower rate than your competitors to attract clients. This can help you build your portfolio and gain valuable experience.
- Build your Portfolio: When you’re starting out as a freelancer, building a portfolio is essential. You can attract clients who are looking for affordable options and build a portfolio of work that showcases your skills.
- Gain Experience: Freelancing requires skills and experience. You can gain valuable experience, improve your skills, and learn what works and what doesn’t.
- Build Relationships: It can help you build relationships with clients. By delivering quality work at an affordable price, you can then earn the trust of clients, which can lead to long-term relationships and repeat business.
- Attract New Clients: It can help you attract new clients who may be hesitant to work with a freelancer with no experience. By offering an affordable option, you can establish yourself as a reliable and trustworthy freelancer.
- Gain Referrals: Satisfied clients are likely to refer you to others. By offering quality work at a lower cost, you can generate positive word-of-mouth referrals and build your reputation as a freelancer.
However, remember to increase your prices as you gain more experience! Don’t undersell yourself!
⚡️ Keep Learning
As you work on projects, continue to learn and improve your skills. Take courses, attend workshops, and read industry blogs to stay up-to-date with the latest trends and techniques.
Remember, building a successful freelance career takes time and effort. Stay focused, be persistent, and keep working towards your goals!
